Description:
This is a well-known NAXOS series by Ries (1784-1838). Ries studied piano with Beethoven and traveled throughout Europe as a pianist. His works, while influenced by his teacher, are very original and have a well-established personality. The Sonata in D major is a work of his youth, composed in 1808. It was published in 1811 during his stay in France. The vivacious first movement, which makes excellent use of the bright key of D major, is indeed a richly conceived piece that connects the Classical and Romantic periods. The second movement, with its characteristic rhythm, and the final movement are splendid variations. You can hear the "good sound of the 18th century" in this piece. The Sonata in A-flat major, the second to last sonata of Ries, was written in 1826 and is a highly sought-after work that represents the culmination of his compositional techniques.Various dramas are hidden in the first movement, which seems to be filled with tranquility and peace.
