Gesualdo’s (1566–1613) Third Book of Madrigals, published in 1595, is known for clearly demonstrating a shift in his style. Rather than using works by the leading poets of the time, he preferred to set poems by unknown and anonymous authors. This was a choice unique to Gesualdo, who could imbue his poetry with drama and remarkable expressiveness through the power of music alone, without relying on the popularity of the verses. Not only are the titles of each piece surprising, but both the content and the music are truly wondrous. Their slow, viscous resonance lingers in the ear long after the music has ended. Volume 1 (8.570548) and Volume 2 (8.570549) have also been very well received. The full scope of this musician—who was unjustly neglected—is finally coming to light. Naxos Japan
