A program of Schumann's masterpieces, including the luscious "Fantasy Pieces," which celebrates the lyricism of the Romantic period, and the "Symphonic Exercises," known as a piano masterpiece with a high degree of difficulty. The performance by Koji Okazaki, a leading bassoonist who has been active in the ensemble for 50 years, and Etsuko Okazaki, one of Japan's leading pianists, was exquisite and profound, with a great sense of scale. Koji Okazaki graduated at the top of his class from the Detmold University of Music, and after serving as principal bassoonist of the NHK Symphony Orchestra and as a visiting professor at the Tokyo University of the Arts, he is currently professor at Musashino Academia Musicae and president of the Japan Bassoon Society. Etsuko Okazaki studied at the Tokyo University of the Arts and then at the Detmold University of Music. While actively engaged in ensemble activities as well as a soloist, she has been a professor at Musashino Academia Musicae for many years and continues to teach younger students as a part-time lecturer.
