[Works of Agnes Tyrrell, a Female Composer Who Died Young] Agnes Tyrrell was a composer and pianist born in what is now Brno, Czech Republic. Her short life and works remain insufficiently known today. Raised by an English teacher father and a Czech mother, she was immersed in multilingualism and music from childhood. She performed in concerts at age 9 and entered the Vienna Musikverein Conservatory (precursor to the current University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna) at 16, studying piano under Adalbert Pacher. However, health issues forced her to abandon a performing career, leading her to focus solely on composition. She left behind approximately 300 works, ranging from symphonies and operas to piano pieces and songs. Her collection of etudes, dedicated to Franz Liszt, was highly acclaimed. After his untimely death at age 36, his works were long forgotten, but recent research and editions have led to a growing reappraisal. This album features choral and piano works, each showcasing Tyrrell's diverse expressive power. "Farewell" in D minor, with its quiet atmosphere, uses a poem by Heine, while "Early Summer Morning" and "Things Past" employ poems by Gäbel to sing of life's radiance.In recent years, thanks to the efforts of German pianist and composer Kira Steckewey, the first publications of piano works have progressed, introducing important pieces such as the "Grand Sonata No. 2" to the world, significantly advancing the movement for Tyrrell's reappraisal.
