This is a typical "Biddulph of Strings" album, reissuing a collaboration between Myra Hess and a group of string players. Hess first met Yerry Dalani in London in 1916 and they hit it off, and the two, who were three years apart in age, became close friends and played together for more than 20 years. In 1928, "The Telegraph" wrote that "there had not been a better duo since Isay and Busoni. This album is a reissue of the recording of the piano trio for British Columbia, and the cello players are also splendid. In Schubert's first piece, Felix Sammond, known as the premiere performer of Elgar's Cello Concerto, and in Brahms' second piece, Gaspard Casado, who is well known in Japan. In the first movement of both pieces, the music moves majestically along with Hess's piano, which keeps a steady beat; in the slow movement, it transforms into a dreamy soft sound; the scherzo is bouncy; and the piano's high notes, bright and full-grained, are so bright that they could be compared to pearls. Schubert's last movement is a lively song, and Brahms is very energetic. She had been in poor health after major surgery the year before this, but she is so blazing that it is hard to believe. Dallani's technique and the brilliance of her high notes are superb, and her characteristic portamento is well recorded. It goes without saying that the two cellists are second to none. Hess recorded Brahms No. 2 with Szigeti & Casals after the war, which became famous, and this SP recording has been almost completely buried. This CD is a rare reissue. The Schubert piano sonatas in between seem to be "extras," but they may be the best way to get a taste of her playing. The first movement is designated as Allegro moderato, but the slow, graceful steps make you love the music. The second movement, Andante, is almost like an adagio, the ultimate in elegance. In the third movement, the tempo changes to a fast one. The shining tone and dynamic performance are exhilarating and charming. Naxos Japan
