Ensemble Amacord

Thomas Münzer, a 16th century German religious leader of the Peasants' War, became acquainted with Martin Luther in 1519 and soon became a follower and preacher in Zwickau. He was captured and executed as a leader of the German Peasants' War against the allied lords. This recording is being released on the 500th anniversary of Münzer's execution in 1525, a year in which he fought, lost, and died for the people in need. Included here are two works Münzer created as part of his liturgical reform of the church. They were published with scores in 1523 and 1524. Münzer used words from the Bible and liturgical texts translated from Latin into German. The texts are set to traditional chorale melodies, making the liturgical music simple and accessible to the people. Amarcord, a five-member vocal ensemble founded in 1992 by former members of the Thomas Church Choir, is one of the leading male vocal ensembles in Germany. The ensemble has performed more than 2,500 concerts in 15 countries around the world and has released numerous CDs on German labels such as Raumklang and CARUS, winning international awards. In this recording, Amarcord's singing, which is highly technical, expressive, and of outstanding ensemble ability, adds color and a deep sense of contemplation to Münzer's simple music. Münzer's liturgical music, which had been called "Satanic" for its hostility to Luther, heavily criticized, and forgotten, has been revived after 500 years.
