This is the fourth collection of orchestral works by Swiss composer Richard Fleury. The included Symphony No. 2 was inspired by the Ticino region of southern Switzerland, which he often visited. The first movement is based on a motif of church bells in Lugano, and the second through fourth movements are based on folk songs. The work follows the form of Bruckner's symphonies, but has an atmosphere similar to the orchestral nature paintings of his close friend Joseph Marx, and was premiered in Lugano on August 1, 1936, Swiss National Day, under his own baton, and broadcast on radio throughout the country. The "Nocturne" is a musical depiction of a dreamlike fantasy scene, reminiscent of Richard Strauss. It was conducted by the composer himself and premiered by the Orchester der Stadt der Stadt Bern on October 16, 1939. Naxos Japan
