Kent Nagano

The Premiere Of The "German Requiem" In A Festive Atmosphere Opens Up New Possibilities For The Performance Of The "German Requiem. Kent Nagano, Who Has Been The General Music Director Of The City Of Hamburg Since The 2015/16 Season And Is Highly Acclaimed As The Principal Conductor Of The Hamburg State Opera And The Hamburg Philharmonic, Has Recorded The Masterpiece German Requiem. Being The Intellectual That He Is, He Attempts To Recreate The Premiere In Bremen On April 10, 1868, Rather Than Performing It In Its Common Form. That Premiere Was Planned As A "Good Friday Holy Concert" And Attracted An Audience Of 2,500. In Reality, It Was More Of A Festive Event Concert For The Local Public Than A Performance In A Solemn Atmosphere. Under Brahms' Own Baton, The First Three Chapters Of The German Requiem Were Performed, Followed By Three Smaller Pieces With His Close Friend Joseph Joachim As Soloist. The Rest Of The German Requiem Is Performed Afterwards, But The Fifth Chapter, "Thus Now To You," Was Not Performed Because It Had Not Yet Been Written. The Famous Aria From Bach'S "Matthew Passion", "Have Mercy On Me, My God" Was Sung Solo By Joachim'S Wife Amalie, Followed By Three Songs From Handel'S Messiah, And The Concert Ended On A High Note With The Famous "Hallelujah Chorus" (In This Recording, Mozart'S Orchestrated German Chorus Version Was Performed). (In This Recording, Mozart'S Orchestration Was Sung In German.) After The Concert, Not A Few Audience Members Went Out To A Pub, Which Was Different From The Atmosphere Of Going Home Solemnly With Feelings For The Dead. The Commentary On The Original Recording Refers To This Way Of Enjoying The German Requiem As An "Open Work" And Points Out The Historical Fact That The Piece Has Been Performed In Combination With Various Other Works. The Use Of A Mixed Choir Of Church And Amateur Choirs For This Recording, Rather Than An Opera House Choir, May Have Been Made With The Festive Nature Of Civic Participation In Mind. However, The Performance Never Becomes Amateurish Or Cheerful, And Under The Direction Of Kent Nagano, Who Is Known For His Careful And Precise Finishing, The Singers And Violin Soloists Are Among The Best Of Their Day, And The Performance Is Of Extremely High Perfection. The Low Center Of Gravity Of The Hamburg Philharmonic Is Also Appropriate To The Character Of The Music, Making This Album A Must-Have For Lovers Of The German Requiem. Released On Sacd Hybrid Disc. The Japanese Edition Comes With A Japanese Commentary And Japanese Translation Of The Lyrics. Naxos Japan
