World premiere recording of Weldon's opera "The Judgment of Paris," which astonished the British orchestra! In 1701, the young John Weldon surprised the London music world by winning a competition to compose an opera based on William Congreve's libretto "The Judgment of Paris". This CD is the world's first complete recording of the work. The competition was sponsored by wealthy English aristocrats, who competed in a plot in which Paris the Shepherd chose the most beautiful of three goddesses, Venus, Pallas Athene, and Juno, and gave the winner a golden apple. The previous consensus was that John Eccles, a friend of the scriptwriter and an accomplished playwright who could use a popular actress in his own production, would be the favorite, but Weldon succeeded in creating dramatic music, including a magnificent chorus celebrating the triumph of Venus, and in refining his composition to create the winning piece in the short rehearsal time available on the day of the competition. Weldon succeeded in developing his work in the short time available for rehearsals on the day of the competition, and won the competition. The recording, made with the help of a team of excellent researchers and performers, brings back to life a work that had been buried by the Italian operas that swept through 18th century London.Weldon's melodic beauty and witty drama are still fresh to hear today, and conductor Julian Perkins said he was "convinced that Weldon was a winner." The Cambridge Handel Opera Company, which played the lead role in the performance, is an organization that performs baroque operas in "historically inspired productions.
