The Palazetto Bru Zane, an organization dedicated to the in-depth presentation of French music in the "long 19th century" from the French Revolution to the pre-World War I era, has continuously shed light on the operatic world of the great French master Massenet. In 2024, the Bru Zane label released a recording of the complete works of his most important opera "Werther" in a different baritone version (BZ1056), and a short time later, Massenet, who had established his international reputation, decided to explore a new frontier by releasing a recording of "Griseldis" ( This is a recording of the complete score of "Griseldis" (1901), set in Provence in the south of France. Set in the Provence region of southern France, this experimental drama interweaves a medieval tale full of ups and downs with tragic elements and comical scenes involving the devil. This is not the first recording of the complete work, but it is most welcome that the first recording of the complete work in the 21st century was made with the latest research by the Center for Romantic French Music and the best performers in France. The up-and-coming singers Santoni, Christoyannis, and Chalvet provide a richly acted performance, while Zetouni, who straddles Canada and France, delicately interprets the drama's many ups and downs. As is the label's custom, the booklet (French and English), which is richly illustrated, is also a pleasure to read. (Naxos Japan)
