Robert Simpson is an English composer who is sometimes referred to as the "Bruckner of the 20th century," influenced by Anton Bruckner and Carl Nielsen. Most of his chamber music works were recorded by the Hyperion label in the 1980s and 1990s, leaving some gaps in his discography. The Robert Simpson Society, founded in 1980 to promote his work, produced two albums to fill these gaps, and this is the first. Included here are an early string quartet and two songs discovered after the composer's death. These works prove that he was already an outstanding talent at a young age. In particular, the quartet in D major, composed while he was still a student, was described as "fearless" by the examiners of the time. The last two works are representative of Simpson's mature period, when he was aiming to expand his clarinet repertoire. In the Trio, the virtuoso Emma Johnson gives a tasteful performance.
