Antheil, who was recognized by others as a "musical bad boy" for his outstanding piano technique, original ideas, eccentric behavior, and experimental works and stage performances, has produced many works that have been widely accepted by the public, including film music and operas since his mid-30s. This 1954 opera, "Venus in Africa," is an exotic work set in a North African hotel, where black market intrigue and lovers' quarrels unfold.The script describes episodes that overlap with Antheil's own experiences in North Africa, and his rich life experiences are reflected in the music. Claudia Balański made her operatic debut at the Semperoper in Dresden in the lead role in Aribert Reimann's "Mélusine," and in 2010 she won the German Theater Prize "Faust" for her perfect performance of the lead role in the German premiere of Reimann's "Medea" at the Opera Frankfurt, also in 2010.
