This is the third collection of orchestral works by Ruth Gipps, a British female composer who studied under Vaughan Williams and Gordon Jacob. The album opens with the Coronation March, a series of scenes from Queen Elizabeth's coronation on June 2, 1953, culminating in the excitement of the arrival of the carriages at Westminster Abbey.The "Ambarwalia" was written in memory of her fellow composer Adrian Kraft. The Horn Concerto is a work for Gips' son, Lance Baker. Here, the BBC Symphony Orchestra's principal horn player, Martin Owen, gives a superb performance. The string orchestra's Gringmere Garden is a pastoral little piece inspired by the Lake District, while the First Symphony, completed in September 1942, depicts the horrors of war and is especially notable for its masterful writing in the woodwinds.
