Strauss's operetta "Die Fledermaus" is a masterpiece representing the golden age of Viennese operetta, set at the end of the 19th century in a bourgeois household on New Year's Eve, at a masked ball for debauched aristocrats, and in a prison where petty criminals are imprisoned. The play is a romantic comedy with music by Strauss, full of emotion and liveliness. This production, along with "Hansel and Gretel" and the ballet "The Nutcracker," is still performed frequently at the end of the year in opera houses throughout Europe. The production by Barry Kosky, one of the hottest opera directors in the world today, is a gorgeous production that makes full use of a large stage set, with a twist on contemporary tropes (unisex dancers in stage costumes, characters in costume, etc.) and a wry satire. The Bavarian State Opera Orchestra under the direction of Jurowski, together with excellent singers such as Diana Damrau, Georg Nigl, and Andrew Watts, gave a performance that was as good as "Die Fledermaus" at the same opera house in the 1980s, conducted by Carlos Kleiber, which remains on film.
