Born in Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain in 1969, Gabriel Ercoleca studied composition locally and then went to London to study with Michael Finnissy at the Royal Academy of Music. His works have been performed in Spain, Europe, the United States, Russia, Beijing, and Japan to great acclaim and numerous awards. The three works on this album are characterized by the tension created by their unsettling and wild acoustics. The cello concerto "Ekaitza" celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Basque National Orchestra, and is truly stormy (Ekaitza in Basque) music, highlighted by the eerie descending cello figures. In the third movement, a folkloric dance-like melody can also be heard. The title of the piano concerto, "Piscis," means fish in Basque. From the beginning of the first movement, the chaotic sounds of the orchestra and the boiling, violent piano give a strong impression. In the "Three Michelangelo Sonnets," two cornetto (an ancient instrument, not a brass instrument) create a unique effect. Carlos Mena, a countertenor especially renowned in the field of ancient music, is the soloist.Juanjo Mena studied conducting with Celibidacke in Munich after studying in Madrid. He has held conducting posts with the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra, Teatro Carlo Felice, Bergen Philharmonic, Orquesta Nacional de España, and BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, and in recent years has visited Japan on a regular basis.
