Description:

Pohle's diverse artistry broke new ground in the instrumental art of the German 17th century] German composer Darfit Pohle, whose 400th birthday will be celebrated this year in 2024, was one of the most accomplished students of the master musician Heinrich Schütz at the Dresden court, one of the most important musical centers in 17th century Germany. After leaving Dresden, he worked at the court of Count Hessen-Kassel and Duke Schleswig-Holstein, and from 1660 until his death, he was the head of the court orchestra of Duke Magdeburg in Halle, and is said to have been a close friend of the boy Handel's father. He also left many vocal works, but the most notable are his instrumental ensembles written for a variety of orchestras of up to eight voices, similar to the post-Renaissance German instrumental music of the early 17th century, but utilizing the characteristics of instruments of the violin genus to highlight the independence of each part while also enhancing the sound as an ensemble. The sonatas and dances in this series are in a progressive style that foreshadows Bach's later Brandenburg Concertos No. 3 and No. 6, and are endlessly enjoyable. Many of the pieces have thick middle voices, which is also typical of this period. The ensemble, CREMATISSE, is made up of a number of renowned musicians, including Stephanie de Faye, who is well versed in the manner of 17th century music; Jeremy Papaserzio, a master of double bass reeds; Maturin Matarelle, a reliable low string player; and Guy Panson, a veteran keyboard player. This 2-CD set, which allows the listener to listen to all of the existing ensembles, is a rich project unique to the 21st century, which brings us closer to the essence of Pohle's art, which was brought to many people through the "Chamber Music of the German Baroque" series by the Ricercar Consort, which was also founded in the early days of the Ricercar label. The booklet includes a detailed list of the participating players for each track, allowing you to enjoy the mastery of Pohle's fresh new Italian style on top of the ancient German tradition of polyphonic art.
