The Italian Girl in London", a new production by Frankfurt Opera in 2021, is an excellent and unknown opera by Cimarosa, Leo Hussein & R.B. Schlather - a rare film by the spirited duo! Lydia, a young Italian girl, is staying at a London hotel owned by Mrs. Brillante in pursuit of her lover, Alespin, a young English aristocrat who has abandoned her. The hotel's two guests, Smellus, an uptight Dutch merchant, and Don Polidoro, a cheerful and easygoing Italian, both fall in love at first sight with the beautiful Lydia. Then Alespin, who has been unable to forget Lydia even though his father had once put her off, appears, and the three men begin to play love games. Lydia, who does not reveal her identity to Alespin, asks for help from Madame Brillante, and the hotel is in turmoil as the thoughts of Madame Brillante, Smellus, Don Polidoro, and Alespin intersect over her. ...... The young Cimarosa composed "The Italian Girl in London" (1778), which was a success in Rome, Milan, Venice, and the major opera houses of Europe, and was a major success before "The Secret Marriage" (1792), which would later become the composer's most famous work.This is a newly produced stage film by the up-and-coming duo of Leo Hussein, an accomplished British actor, and R.B. Schlather, a U.S. native who makes his shocking European debut in 2019 with the Frankfurt Opera's new production of "Tamerlano". The setting is a simple hotel lobby with only a reception desk, sofa, and pay phone booth. The five characters in the film are all up-and-coming singers and actors from around the world who have gathered at the Frankfurt Opera House. Hussein's diction leads us through the graceful and lively music of Cimarosa, a brilliant and little-known opera by Cimarosa, who was very popular and active in Europe at the same time as Mozart, and has been wonderfully revived in our time.
