Roland Wilson, Musica Fiata

Description:

Born 100 years before Bach, Schütz was a master of early German Baroque music. Schütz, who studied in Italy twice and was influenced by Gabrieli and Monteverdi, integrates Renaissance and early Baroque styles such as recapitulation and concertos, Schütz integrates Renaissance and early Baroque styles, such as recapitulation and concertos, and combines them with a German religious text in this work. Two of the eight voices of the double chorus have been lost, and Wilson has restored them here. The instrumental part can be performed with two organs, but Wilson has augmented the instrumental part with words left by Schütz himself and words that Dedekind, a bass singer in the Dresden Court Orchestra, heard from Schütz, and he credits his experience working on his early major work, "David's Psalms," as a reference point. In the commentary of the original recording, he says that the experience of working on Schütz's early large-scale work "David Psalms" was helpful. The chorus is made up of eight singers, one per part, for crisp textures, and is divided into two choruses, each with a woodwind cornet (zink) and trombone (sakubat) ensemble, plus violins and violas, depending on the piece. The bass continuo is played by two organs, as well as a dulcian and a chitarrone, adding a touch of grandeur to this collection, which tends to be played in a rather ascetic manner. This recording is a must for fans of early baroque music. Naxos Japan
