Description:

This is the ninth volume of the 10-volume organ edition of Bruckner's complete symphonies, a commemorative project for the 200th anniversary of Bruckner's birth in 2024. The project, which has progressed in numerical order, has finally reached its major work, No. 8. The project has been conducted on different organs each time, but this time Albrecht plays on the organ in the main hall of the Musikverein in Vienna, where Bruckner's work was premiered in 1892. The version used here is the second draft, revised in 1890. The version that is widely performed today was arranged by Eberhard Klotz, who studied organ in Basel, and the large scale music was transferred to the organ. Although a large organ is not as large as a huge orchestra in terms of the number of notes it can play at once and the variety of tones it can use, the arrangement, which carefully examines the structure of the music and the importance of the motifs, reveals some unexpected moments when motifs that are often buried in the orchestra come to the surface. The sublime, mystical, and contemplative atmosphere of the Adagio leaves a deep impression on the listener. The entire performance of No. 8 is approximately 92 minutes long (18:28/15:07/32:14/25:58). The album opens with the motet "Behold the Great Priest," arranged by Albrecht himself and played on a high note. The series presents new works inspired by Bruckner's music, called "Bruckner Fenster = Bruckner's Window," and this time it includes "Nomine" by Thomas Daniel Schley, a composer born in 1957.This is not a performance at the Musikverein in Vienna, but at the organ of the Michaeler Church in Munich. The melodic repetition found in the last movement of the 8th Symphony is reproduced in an upbeat rhythm, and the way the notes build up with skillful counterpoint is magnificent. The piece climaxes with an impressive cornet-like fanfare in the middle, and closes quietly at the end. Naxos Japan
