[Emerson String Quartet ends its 47-year history. Last album with Barbara Hannigan]. The Emerson String Quartet, a leading contemporary string quartet, has announced that it will disband in October 2023. The central work chosen for their last album is Schoenberg's String Quartet No. 2, which they had decided to record since their first collaboration with Barbara Hannigan in 2015. They liken the work, which is like experiencing the flow from tonal to atonal in one work, to "a tall tree with deep emotional roots that invites us into uncharted sonic territory that we must climb," and Hannigan describes the soprano solo added from the third movement as "a primal cry at the end of the century for release from love It's a heavy blow," he says. Also included are Berg's String Quartet, written shortly after his debut as a serious composer after studying with Schoenberg; Melancholy, written by the young Hindemith in his early 20s and cherished by Hannigan as a "jewel of a work"; and Chausson's masterpiece, beautifully sung by Bertrand Chamayou, with the addition of a soprano soloist. Chausson's masterpiece "Song without End," beautifully sung by Bertrand Chamayou. This is an album that draws heavily and beautifully on the aftermath of nearly half a century of their art.
