Beethoven (1770-1827)

Description:

Mehta's first complete Beethoven symphony cycle is finally available! Zubin Mehta was born in 1936. Zubin Mehta was born in 1936, the same generation as Seiji Ozawa (born in 1935). Studied in Vienna, Mehta conducted the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra to great acclaim in 1959, and since then his international career has spanned more than 60 years. It is surprising that there has never been a recording or recording of the complete Beethoven symphonies by Mehta. Meter's first recording of Beethoven's symphonies was No. 7, recorded in 1974. This was only his twelfth year as music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and it is clear that he was very cautious about Beethoven's symphonies. He recorded Beethoven's Fifth and Eighth Symphonies with the New York Philharmonic in 1978 and the Third Symphony in 1980. These are the only session recordings he made. On the other hand, he regularly performs them in concert, and there are live recordings of Nos. 3, 5, 6, 8, and 9.In the Ninth, there is a special concert with the New York Philharmonic (1983), a concert to support the recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake with a joint orchestra of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, and Bavarian National Orchestra (2011), and a ballet version choreographed by Maurice Béjart in a performance to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Tokyo Ballet (Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, 2014). The Ninth includes a special concert with the New York Philharmonic (1983), a concert to support the recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake (2011), and a ballet version choreographed by Maurice Béjart for the 50th anniversary performance of the Tokyo Ballet Company (Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, 2014). From these, one can imagine that Mehta has a special feeling for Beethoven's symphonies. For the first Beethoven symphony cycle of his life, Mehta chose the Florence May Festival Orchestra as his partner, with whom he has served as principal conductor for 32 years since 1985, often collaborating in operas and concerts since then. The duo's Beethoven Zycles was originally scheduled for the fall of 2020 or early the following year, the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth, but was postponed due to the spread of the new corona infection, and was completed two years later. Their enthusiasm and persistence are evident. The performance here differs from the slim and sharp playing of historical techniques, from the German-style low-key sound, and from the dynamic and opulent playing of Mehta 40-50 years ago. The tempo is generally slow, and the orchestra supports Meter's conductor, who seems to chew each note and phrase with all his might. The sound is bright and light, and one senses a sense of freedom. This is neither a pursuit of newness nor a retrospective of the good old days, but a very unique and distinctive performance of Beethoven. The complete Beethoven symphonies by Italian orchestras are very rare, so this is an interesting project from that point of view. The Japanese edition comes with a Japanese commentary by Mitsunori Eto. Naxos Japan
