Verdi (1813-1901)
Description:
The young Verdi's masterpiece "Ernani" is performed by a perfect lineup of four leading singers. The time is 16th century Spain. Hernani (actually an Aragonese nobleman), who swears revenge for the murder of his father by King Don Carlo by turning himself into a bandit, is in love with a girl named Elvira. However, her father's avenger, King Don Carlo, falls in love with Elvira. Furthermore, Elvira's uncle and guardian, Silva, is pressing her to marry him. One night, Hernani and King Don Carlo happen to sneak into Silva's castle, where Elvira lives, separately. Verdi sought out the play "Hernani" by Victor Hugo, a pioneer of French Romantic theater, and commissioned Francesco Maria Piave to write the libretto. It was the first of what would become a fruitful collaboration between Verdi and Piave (Piave wrote and contributed to Verdi's nine plays, the most of any of his contemporaries). This work is known as a remarkable breakthrough in Verdi's musical dramaturgy, in which the arias and polyphonies skillfully express the emotional turmoil of the complex relationships between the characters. The four principal roles in this film are played by Francesco Meli, a graceful tenor, as Hernani; Maria Jose Ciri, a soprano of remarkable dramatic exuberance, as Elvira; Roberto Frontali, a renowned Verdi baritone, as King Don Carlo; and Vitaly Kowaljov, a character actor bass, as Silva. The character actor bass, Vitaly Kowaljov, is a perfect lineup for this production. The orchestra and chorus, led by master conductor James Conlon, against the backdrop of Leo Muscato's sophisticated stage direction, present a vivid drama by the young Verdi. Naxos Japan
