Description:

The violinist Judith Shapiro (1914-2007) was born in Buffalo, New York, and was a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral concertmaster, and she has captivated audiences in a wide variety of fields, from classical and contemporary music to pop and film music. As a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral concertmaster, she has captivated audiences in a wide variety of fields, from classical to contemporary music, as well as pop and film music. Following the release of his earlier album "Art of Judith Shapiro" (BIDD85025), this album offers a wealth of performances as a classical soloist. Shapiro performed with the Buffalo Philharmonic at the age of 12 and studied with Efrem Zimbalist at the Curtis Institute of Music before moving to Los Angeles in 1941, where she became the first female concertmaster in Hollywood movie studio history, recording soundtracks for numerous films for more than 20 years. In the 1950s, as concertmaster of the RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra, she recorded works such as Jascha Heifetz's Lalo: Spanish Symphony and He was also a member of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. As a member of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Shapiro was also active in contemporary music, especially Stravinsky, which he highly appreciated. As a soloist, Shapiro has performed with Fritz Reiner, Eugene Goossens, and William Steinberg, as well as with Arthur Schnabel, Lily Krauss, Rudolf Firkushny, and Bruno Walter on piano. On this album, it is a pleasure to hear Brahms' three violin sonatas first. The tempi are kept moderate to slightly fast, and the sense of form that remains unwavering even in the most passionate moments is perfect for Brahms. The two Stravinsky works are stereo recordings made under the composer's supervision. The musical flair displayed in the Brahms is matched by Stravinsky's pseudo-classical works.Shapiro adapted beautifully to the folk-oriented repertoire of Bloch, Bartók, and Milhaud, confirming her reputation for being able to "play any piece as required. Her ability to capture moments of elegance in the midst of intense folkloric expression is also appealing, and is presumed to have been one of the reasons for her high popularity. Pianists Berkowitz and Brooks Smith are master pianists who have repeatedly collaborated with Piatigorsky and Heifetz, respectively. The last two tracks, placed like bonus tracks, are pops for a change. The inside pages of Biddulph's manual are usually in black and white, but this album features four pages of photographs by Pietro Gwarneri, who used to work with Shapiro. This shows how much he put into this album. Naxos Japan
