Description:
Johann Hermann Schein contributed to the rise of early German Baroque music together with Heinrich Schütz and Samuel Scheidt. As court music director in Weimar and music director of St. Thomas's Church in Leipzig, he conveyed the teachings of Lutheranism in attractive music and contributed to the development of church music in the concertato style of the Venetian school of music. This collection of 26 madrigales in five voices and bass clef, "The Fountain of Israel," published in 1623, is his masterpiece from the Leipzig period, an ambitious work that combines the German-Dutch motet tradition with the Italian madrigale style. It is a solemn and beautiful collection of music that also accurately reflects the sentiments of 17th century German Protestants. The performance is by Opera Musica, founded in 2011 by conductor Gregor Mayer. The ensemble is made up of a group of talented singers. Naxos Japan
