A collection of piano works by Prague-born composer Jaromir Weinberger (also known as Weinberger), who studied composition under Max Reger at the age of 20 at the Leipzig Conservatory in Germany, and whose 1927 opera "Schwanda the Bagpipe Blower" was a great international success Weinberger, however, is still not very well known for the series of piano pieces he composed as a teenager. The two works on this album, Piano Sonatas No. 2 and No. 3, both from 1915, are contrasting: No. 2 is humorous in places and gloomy throughout, while No. 3 combines neoclassical lightness and French fluidity. Other works that remind us of the talented young composer include a sarabande in the form of a 16th century dance, a waltz and a pavane, "Prints - Five Preludes and Fugues" that reveal his mastery of counterpoint, and three pieces from "Schwanda the Bagpipe Player," one of his most famous works. The works are performed by Gottlieb Wallisch. Naxos Japan
