Franck, Cesar (1822-1890)

Description:

The 200th anniversary of Franck's birth. Franck, who celebrated the bicentennial of his birth in 2022, was naturalized in France and laid the foundation of modern French music. The Musique en Wallonie label, which carefully introduces the musical heritage of the French-speaking side of the country (Wallon region), is releasing a two-CD set of important organ music works, the essence of this composer, to coincide with the anniversary year. The album features Cindy Castillo, who is now at the forefront of the European scene as the 11th resident organist of the Sapporo Concert Hall Kitara, Joris Verdun, who has successfully completed a collection of Franck's organ and harmonium works for the Ricercar label, and Bart Verheyen, who is steadily making his presence felt under the direction of Cindy Castillo. The three Belgian players, including Bart Verheyen, will play two famous organs by two important organ builders with close ties to Franck: Cavaillé-Coll, who greatly developed the world of 19th century symphonic organs, and Merkran, known for his acquaintance with Franck in his later years, both of which were built in the composer's lifetime. Both instruments were made during the composer's lifetime, at the same time as the works he performed. The six works that were released one after another in the 1860s and brought organ music to a new level, together with the "Three Pieces" from 1878 and the masterpiece "Three Chorales" from the last years of his life, offer a masterful performance that pursues an ideal reproduction of the sound image the composer would have imagined, with subtle differences in the personalities of the three players, It is exceptional to be able to enjoy the sound of the famous instrument, which can freely express dynamic expression and delicate tonal beauty, as if bathed in the sound of the instrument. The comprehensive commentary (in French, Dutch, English, and German) with registration details and rare illustrations from the same period is another of the label's unique and reliable attractions.
