Description:
Long-awaited recording by Minkowski & Opera National de Bordeaux! The true value of one of the greatest masterpieces in the history of French opera is restored! Before Wagner's music captivated many people, French grand opera was as popular as Italian bel canto opera throughout Europe. The German-born Jewish composer Maierbeer, one of the most influential figures in this movement, won overwhelming popularity with his "Robert the Devil," first performed in Paris in 1831, followed by "The Huguenots" (1836) and "The African Woman" (1864), which firmly established his reputation. Robert the Devil" was immensely popular throughout the 19th century, and even appeared symbolically in Rodinbach's novel "Bruges, the Dead City" (1892), on which Korngold's "The City of Death" (1920) was based. The music of Maierbeer was once almost forgotten in the 20th century, when Wagner and his associates waged a desperate campaign of negativity in the wake of the later upsurge of Wagner's exaltation. The iconic masterpiece "Robert the Devil" was finally recorded at the National Opera of Bordeaux, with which Minkowski, a master opera singer who is dedicated to the restoration of unknown French opera, is enthusiastic about its productions and continues a good relationship. The setting is the medieval Sicilian capital of Palermo. Robert, "Son of the Devil," is the love of his life for the Sicilian princess Isabelle, but is seduced by the help and sweet words of his father, the devil Bertrand, who hides his true identity to get close to him and win his soul for himself, leaving him penniless. He is then bewitched by Bertrand's help and sweet words. For a time, he succeeds in repelling his enemies and gaining access to Isabelle through the magical power he obtains through Bertrand's mediation, but when he is reunited with his half-sister Alice in Palermo, he comes to his senses, loses his magical help, and is taken prisoner. Bertrand insists that he can get close to Isabelle if he sells his soul. Bertrand, however, repels the temptation in accordance with his mother's last will and testament received from Alice, and the lovers are united. ...... The ballet of the ghosts of the nuns whom Bertrand summons, the great scene change at the end of the show, and the entire production, which has no shortage of spectacles, are all part of the show. The spectacle in five acts is a landmark in the history of opera, with Minkowski's overwhelming drive and exquisite interpretation, and a carefully selected cast of singers. In addition to the excellent performances, the BRU ZANE label's fully illustrated commentary (in French and English) is also very reliable, making this the definitive recording that is a must for those who wish to rediscover the true value of Maierbeer and French 19th century opera.
