Description:
Michael Gielen specializes in two works from the late German Romantic period. Zemlinsky's "Lyric Symphony" is in the form of a song cycle for song and orchestra, reminiscent of Mahler's "Song of the Earth. The poem by Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore (lyrics translated from English into German), written on the theme of love, is an ambitious work that employs all of Zemlinsky's musical language skills. The entire work is full of sensual melodies, but Gielen does not immerse himself in the music, but rather expresses it intelligently and without hesitation. The soloists are Callan Armstrong, known as a Wagnerian singer, and Roland Hermann, known for his singing of Mozart and Wagner, and their singing is wonderful, not overshadowed by the richness of the orchestra. The album also includes "Prelude to a Drama" by Schreker, a composer of the same generation as Zemlinsky.
