The Chamber Orchestra of Europe will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2021. The orchestra has performed with top-class conductors and musicians, including Claudio Abbado, who was deeply involved in the founding of the orchestra, and with Nikolaus Arnoncourt, with whom it had a particularly close relationship. The Chamber Orchestra of Europe, a modern instrument orchestra with a small size, clear sound, and flexible and ambitious musicality, was an orchestra that could embody Arnoncourt's ideals and always responded to his strict demands, to which Arnoncourt continued to place special trust and affection. Arnoncourt's pet theory was that "it is far better to take risks and fall than to play it safe," and that "great music-making is always a recipe for disaster. All of the "great music-making" pieces included in this CD have never before appeared on CD. The performances are generally dramatic, with the tight tempi and accents expected of this duo, with the vigor and verve of a live performance. In the Haydn, in particular, Arnoncourt's performance clearly brought out the details of the composer's devices, and the performance was a true testament to Arnoncourt's talent. In Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, surprisingly, all the movements are shorter than in the Teldec recording of 16 years ago, and the tension and intensity of the performance are even higher.The COE has been a reliable and adventurous corps.
