Description:

The second album by Robert Trevino and the Basque National Orchestra is a collection of works by four American composers active in the 19th and 20th centuries. Trevino, who was born in the U.S., states in the original CD commentary (in English) that "Gershwin, Copland, and Bernstein are not the only American music" and that "the pursuit of great ideals by individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds who inspire, influence, and connect with each other is what makes music American. Through four composers with different styles, the program will convey aspects of American music that are often overlooked. Charles Martin Leffler was born in Berlin and moved around Europe before coming to the United States in 1882, where he played violin in the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Self-described as "the composer of Alsace," his style is in the vein of French Impressionism. Inspired by Maeterlinck's puppet show, "The Death of Tintagir" is a 26-minute symphonic poem featuring Leffler's favorite viola d'amore.Critic Tim Page has described the work as "a Fauré orchestration of Rimsky-Korsakov's 'Scheherazade,' and you get the picture. Carl Ruggles, known as the "atonalist," preferred to paint rather than compose during his lifetime. Although he left extremely few musical works, his rigorous and penetrating compositional techniques have been reevaluated in recent years. Evocation" is a four-movement piece that lasts about 10 minutes. The third composer is Howard Hanson, a conservative neo-romantic composer. The third is Howard Hanson, a conservative neo-romantic composer whose "Before Dawn" is the world premiere recording of his youthful work, a short piece of less than seven minutes that evokes the grandeur of nature with a magnificent sound reminiscent of Richard Strauss. Henry Cowell is known for his experimental music such as Tone Cluster. His progressive style had a great influence on subsequent generations. The 20-minute-long "Variations for Orchestra" is a late work. Although the experimental elements have faded away, the beautiful sound of the saxophone, the piano and percussion, and the scenes that change from one to another are brilliant. Naxos Japan
