This is a series of complete piano works by Palmgren, a Finnish composer active in the first half of the 20th century. He was greatly impressed by the performances of Ferruccio Busoni, who had shown talent since his boyhood and was a frequent visitor to Finland, and entered the Helsinki Conservatory in 1895 to further his studies. He then studied in Berlin and took lessons from Busoni in Weimar, where he gained a foothold as a performer and composer, and eventually became active as a pianist and composer. This third collection contains a variety of works, including world premiere recordings, written over a period of almost 50 years, centered around three small pieces: the lush "Lyric Interludes" written in his teens and early 20s; "Spring," one of the most famous works of Palmgren's middle period, which is strongly influenced by the Impressionist style, known as Izumi Tateno's favorite musician; and "Piano Concerto" written in the mid-1950s. Spring," one of Palmgren's masterpieces, and "Sun and Clouds," a masterpiece from his later years that expresses the changing seasons of Scandinavia from January to December. All of these beautiful works are rooted in Scandinavian folk songs, but effectively employ chromatic harmony. Jouni Somelo is one of the most active pianists in contemporary Finland.
