Composer François-Joseph Gosek is known today only for his lovely violin piece "Gavotte". However, he left behind nearly 30 symphonies, orchestral works, chamber works, vocal works, and operas in all genres, and is also praised as the "father of the French symphony. His religious works on this album are known for their groundbreaking style, especially his Christmas oratorio "The Nativity," premiered in 1774, which was acclaimed by audiences and critics for its detailed orchestral parts and lively depiction of shepherds and angels sung by the choir, The Mass for the Dead, composed in 1760, is an imposing work that opens with a solemn introduction.
