This 2-CD set is a compilation of seven of Gluck's many operas to be heard. All are excerpts from the ORFEO label's best performances. Among them is a live performance of the monumental 1964 recording of "Orfeo e Euridice" conducted by master conductor Ferdinand Leitner of the Capella Coloniensis, which had just been established in 1954. This is a cutting-edge performance at a time when performances on ancient instruments were not yet fully recognized. Although the recording is in monaural, you can feel the real breath of the players and singers. The other performances were recorded from the 1980s to 1990s and feature some of the best singers of the time, including Jesse Norman, Franco Bonizzoli, and Ileana Kotrbasch.
