Hansjörg Albrecht, a renowned organist with a wide repertoire, performs Dvořák's overture "Carnival" and Symphony No. 9 "From the New World," along with works by Barber and Copland, on his latest disc for the organ. The arrangement of "From the New World" was written by Hungarian-born Sigmond Szatmáry (1939-). Studied under Helmut Walcha, he is not only an excellent organist but also a highly acclaimed composer. Other works have been arranged to take full advantage of the organ's tone, giving them a different appeal from the originals. In particular, the second movement of "From the New World" and the slow, solemn sound of Barber's Adagio are beautiful only on the organ. Albrecht's mastery of the three organs of St. Michael's Church, Hamburg's representative church, is unparalleled, and he delivers a superb performance. Naxos Japan
