Description:

Pervo & the Tonehalle launch the complete Tchaikovsky symphony cycle, the first of which is No. 5! In 2019, Paavo Järvi will assume the position of Music Director of the Tonhalle Orchestra. In 2019, Paavo Järvi will begin recording the complete Tchaikovsky symphonies, a first for him and for the Swiss orchestra. The first work chosen is the Fifth. In fact, it was the first Tchaikovsky symphony to be performed in Zurich in 1895, followed by the "Pathetique" the following year and the "Francesca da Rimini" in 1901. The Fifth Symphony is a work of the Tonhalle Orchestra's repertoire, and is the first of its kind in the world. In No. 5, the blend of Pavo's characteristic lightness and the tone of the tone-halle's powerful sound creates a pleasant sense of crispness and propulsiveness, and the performance is distinctly different from Tchaikovsky, which is heard only with a strong push, even though the singing is evident in every detail. The sense of balance at the beginning of the finale, where each note is deeply sung without losing its nobility, and the main part, where the tempo is clearly maintained and the excitement is overwhelming, are also exceptional. The coupling piece, "Francesca da Rimini," is relatively long for a purely orchestral work other than Tchaikovsky's symphonies, and is considered rather difficult to understand, but Pavo manages to keep the stormy ideas in perspective while still sounding fiercely aggressive, letting the orchestra sing the romantic melody with aggressiveness, and bringing out the full appeal of the work by making the entire piece sound well-paced. Pavo's performance is a stormy piece of music, but he is able to bring out the best of the work's charms by making the orchestra sing the romantic melodies with a positive attitude, and by making the entire piece sound well-paced. This is a wonderful album that exceeds expectations, and I look forward to hearing more from this series in the future. Naxos Japan
