Description:
Egon Veresh (1885-1974), a Viennese composer who studied musicology with Guido Adler at the University of Vienna and studied counterpoint privately with Schoenberg, became a founding member of the International Society for Contemporary Music in 1922 and an adjunct professor of musicology at the University of Vienna in 1929. As a Jew, he fled to England in 1938 to avoid persecution in Nazi Germany, and remained in Oxford until his death in 1974. After that, he worked as an educator in Oxford until his death in 1974. This "Prisoner's Sacrifice" is a musical drama written at the height of his activity. It is based on "The Prisoner's Sacrifice" (1913), a masked dance-drama with music by the Achi Maya tribe of Rabinal, Baja Verapaz, Guatemala, which was faithfully edited into modern language by the German writer Stücken. The tragedy depicts the capture and sacrifice of a K'iche prince who attempts to invade the Rabinal tribe. The tense music by Veresh was conducted by Friedrich Zerha, who completed Berg's "Lulu". The music is a masterpiece of sound creation by this lover of the New Viennese Music School. Naxos Japan
