The composers featured here were all central figures in the Polish, salon culture that was prevalent in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. They were all involved in the salons as hosts, guests, performers, or composers. Salons were held once a week or once every two weeks, where aristocrats, artists, writers, philosophers, politicians, scholars, scientists, musicians, and others gathered to enjoy conversation, readings, music, and sometimes dancing. And in Poland, the last king, Poniatowski, was influenced by France and hosted his own "Thursday Supper Club. At the beginning of the 19th century, when Chopin lived in Warsaw, there were about a dozen music salons. One of them was hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Wolowski, parents of the composer and famous pianist of the time, Szymanowska, who appears on this CD, and was attended by Elsener (famous as Chopin's teacher) and Ressel (who studied under Haydn and led an amateur music society). This album is an album in which you can almost hear the lively atmosphere of the salon with performances using instruments of the time (including restored models). Naxos Japan
