The trumpet with a valve mechanism as we know it today appeared around 1815. Until then, the natural trumpet was a simple instrument consisting of a straight cylindrical tube with a bell (morning glory) attached. Although various improvements were made to the instrument, the trumpet could only play overtones, making it difficult to play accurate scales, and it was mainly used for fanfares in military bands. In the Baroque period, instruments that could play simple melodies finally began to appear, and the works on this album were all written for the natural trumpet at that time. The reason why most of the pieces are in the key of D major is because it is the easiest to take advantage of the instrument's characteristics. The performer of this album is Christian Kovács, a trumpet player born in Hungary in 1796. He studied trumpet and church music at the Franz Liszt School of Music, and then studied zink (cornet with sound hole) technique at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, where he received a master's degree in old music trumpet technique.He uses a baroque trumpet with a long winding tube called clarion, and plays a smooth melody with excellent technique and an eloquent dialogue with the orchestra.
