[Grindbourne Live Explores the True Value of the Pulitzer Prize-Winning Opera *Vanessa*!] Vanessa, a lady of means; her young niece, Erica; and Vanessa’s elderly mother. A young man named Anatole visits the three women, who live a life shrouded in mystery. He is the son of Vanessa’s former lover, Anatole—a man who not only shares his father’s name but also bears an uncanny resemblance to him. Anatole takes up residence in Vanessa and Erica’s home, psychologically unsettling both women through seduction and betrayal. Driven to the brink, Erica is left behind in profound solitude. The narrative structure—resembling a vast set of mirror images, symbolized by the mirror treated as a key metaphor—is also masterful. *Vanessa*, for which Barber composed music based on a libretto by Menotti—who was also his personal partner—premiered at the Metropolitan Opera in 1958. The score, distinguished by its elegance and tension, combined with a taut psychological drama reminiscent of Hitchcock’s thrillers—which were at their peak at the time—was highly acclaimed in the United States and won the Pulitzer Prize. However, from its premiere to the present day, it has never garnered high acclaim in Europe. Directed by Keith Warner, known for his bold staging, this Grange Park production combines a period setting reminiscent of old-fashioned America—free of eccentricity—with extensive use of mirrors and glass, along with effectively employed projection mapping, to create a fresh approach that vividly portrays the characters’ inner psyches. The production was a resounding success, thanks to the passionate performances of the principal cast—including Emma Bell in the title role and Virginie Vérez as Erica—and the crisp, precise conducting of Jakub Hrůša, who has a long-standing collaboration with Warner.
