The 18th century Spanish composer Antonio Soler (also known as Padre Soler) lived for over 30 years as a clergyman at the royal monastery of El Escorial, near Madrid, and copied many works by Scarlatti, the senior member of the Spanish royal family, while also writing his own music. He also wrote his own music and left his mark on history with his many works, including numerous sonatas for keyboard. However, it is not well known that he was not only an organist but also a chapel conductor and left many religious choral works. The works recorded here, all in Latin for two groups of chorus and instrumental ensemble, are world premiere recordings, bringing to light an unexpected side of Soler, who has been known only as a keyboard composer of the Rococo period, but who was also familiar with church music in the old tradition. La Grande Chapelle, led by Lecasens, a musicologist who leads the world of Spanish classical music, has again gathered together some of Europe's most talented players of classical music (including Marc Antay on flute and Mira Grodeanu on principal strings, many of whom are also well-known soloists). The audience will be able to enjoy the profound expression with deep reverence for the great people of their hometown.The only instrumental work on this disc, Largo for organ, was performed on a rare historical Spanish 18th century organ in the church where the recording was made.
