Baptiste Romain is a man who shows up not only at the Ensemble Gilles Banschois, but also at numerous projects when doing medieval music with instruments around the Basel Schola Cantorum. He is an expert on medieval "bowed string instruments" in general, and it is no exaggeration to say that he is a new leader in the study of these instruments. This album is a condensation of Romain's findings, and is an attempt to unravel the medieval fiddle, an instrument that is often treated ambiguously, while being aware of its origins and its relationship to traditional instruments from around Europe. The program is designed to be a "one-stop shop" for all medieval fiddle music in Europe and beyond. The cast of performers includes Elizabeth Ramsey (Ramsey), a bowed string player who is also very active in the European medieval music scene, and Tierry Gomar, a superb percussionist who has appeared frequently on Ricercar's medieval music albums. Ensemble Unicorn's Marc Levon also participates on lute. Baptiste Romain himself, as is his habit as a medieval instrumentalist, plays a wide variety of instruments, sometimes even the old-fashioned bagpipes. Naxos Japan
