Growth is always a lonely journey, full of forward-looking expectations, anxieties, immature possibilities, aspirations, and closure. The second album by Li Yilei, a London-based Chinese composer and multi-instrumentalist, is now available on CD in Japan only. This is a meditative moment of reincarnation where past self and memory meet the present, and the sound image of this peachy ambient is created. One bonus track is included only on the Japanese edition. This is the second full-length work by London-based Chinese composer and multi-instrumentalist Li Yilei, following his much-talked-about and still long-selling "OF" from 2021. An introspective reflection on his childhood journey, the new work brings together samples of old Chinese TV shows, mechanical children's toys, and a variety of acoustic and electronic instruments, some of which were designed and built by Lee himself. The Chinese title of "NONAGE" is "垂坦抜き," which means "childhood" or "disheveled hair," referring both figuratively and literally to the carefree period of a child's life when his or her hair is down.For Lee, NONAGE is a place he constantly revisits to learn about fear and fearlessness, love and despair, grief and joy, curiosity and mistakes. He remembers "pressing piano keys as if touching flowers, reading sheet music as if looking at paintings, writing as if talking to himself, and welcoming death as if welcoming life." Initially conceived as an archival project, the record traces and re-imagines some of Lee's childhood memories through smells, places, and colors, bringing to life the lingering emotions that linger in adulthood. The music is built around a variety of unusual sound sources, including a toy piano and other broken instruments, a hand-cranked music box, a bird whistle, a broken accordion, and anything else Lee could find that might evoke an early memory. Scattered throughout are samples of Lee's childhood piano jams, meditative moments of reincarnation where past self and memory meet the present.
