Following the massive hit “Downtown” the previous year, 1965 was a prolific and successful year for Petula. The songs, gathered under the concept of “covering the world’s greatest hits,” are diverse, ranging from the popular Gypsy Kings cover on Track 6, a slow interpretation of a Beatles number on Track 8, to the refreshing bossa nova on Track 10. In the UK, it was released under the title “Petula Clark Sings The International Hits.” (This release adopts the US version, notable for its wool hat artwork.) The album is packed with nine bonus tracks. From Track 13—the song that led her to France—to Track 21, a beautiful, blissful track that was originally a B-side, the album is brimming with dreamy gems that capture the very essence of pop. (*Although the title might be misleading, this release is not a so-called “best-of” compilation but a reissue of the original album released in 1965.) Minoru Wakasugi (Music Critic and Writer): He contributes to magazines and books and writes CD liner notes. He has also produced CD and DVD projects, releasing over 200 titles to date.
