The new "Arnold Schoenberg Edition" is a hardcover edition of three CDs and Blu-ray. All of Schoenberg's creative periods are covered. The works on this disc cover the entire period of Schoenberg's creative career. The works range in style from the Romantic lyricism of "The Purified Night," Op. 4 (performed in the 1943 revised version for string orchestra) to the twelve-tone technique of "Variations for Orchestra," Op. 31. Also included is the "Violin Concerto" Op.36 with Patricia Kopatchinskaja as soloist, and the rare unfinished oratorio "Jacob's Ladder," which presents a complete picture of Schoenberg's musical explorations. A Close Relationship with the Berliner Philharmoniker The relationship between the Berlin Philharmonic and Schönberg began in January 1919 when "The Purified Night" appeared on the Philharmonic's program for the first time, followed by the Berlin premiere of "Glee" in 1923 and the world premiere of "Variations for Orchestra" in 1928 (conducted by Furtwängler).
