Description:

The extraordinary Tcherniakov has done it again. Il trovatore as a chamber drama for five people, played out behind closed doors. And Minkowski conducts. An Il trovatore quite unlike anything seen before. Directed by the audacious Dmitri Tcherniakov and conducted by Marc Minkowski at La Monnaie, this is a provocative staging that no one else would have thought of. Tcherniakov's premise runs as follows. A year after a certain incident, Azucena summons Manrico, the Count di Luna and Leonora in order to establish the truth. Shut in a single room, the four reluctantly begin, at Ferrando's prompting, to re-enact what happened. Hidden facts come to light one after another, and the participants are soon hurling their emotions at one another. For a while the audience may be baffled by the situation, but once Tcherniakov's device takes hold, the taut atmosphere peculiar to a closed-room drama turns into genuine excitement, and the famous final scene lands with tremendous force. Neither chorus nor supporting cast ever appears on stage, and Ines's music is sung by Azucena - nothing here is done in the usual way. Experimental the staging may be, but the singing is outstanding. Leonora is the popular prima donna Marina Poplavskaya; Moscow-born, she is a favourite at leading houses in Europe and America, and was rapturously received at La Monnaie. Manrico is the Ukrainian tenor Misha Didyk, who made his Western debut in Donizetti's Anna Bolena at the Finnish National Opera in 1998 and went on to first appearances at the Vienna State Opera in October 2009 and the Metropolitan Opera in February 2012; his voice is broad and powerful in the East European manner. Scott Hendricks, the Count di Luna, is a baritone from San Antonio, Texas. Azucena is Sylvie Brunet-Grupposo, a French mezzo-soprano of Sicilian descent who has worked frequently with Minkowski, and Giovanni Furlanetto brings real character to the role of Ferrando. Minkowski's clear, springy conducting contributes enormously. As one might expect from a musician who came up through the early music world, he plays passages that are usually cut or altered exactly as written, realising Verdi's original intentions. A staging that would never be seen in Japan, presented here in crystal-clear video. King International
