Most of the members of the Amadeus String Quartet had studied in Vienna, but they fled Nazi persecution and moved to England, where they formed this ensemble in 1948 with British cellist Lovett. The ensemble was so popular that they sold out tickets for their debut concert at the Wigmore Hall the following year, and they were very successful throughout the 1950s and 1960s. However, due to changing musical tastes from the 1970s onward (with a growing preference for sharp-edged expression), it is undeniable that by the end of their career, their popularity was somewhat on the wane. Nevertheless, their uplifting performances are a valuable contemporary expression of the German tradition, and listening to them again today, one can make many new discoveries. This video was recorded in the 1980s, near the end of their career, and features their best Haydn and Mozart.It is a solitary performance that preserves their pride in never losing their German spirit, even though they were active in England for many years. Four years after this performance of "Dissonance," Sidorov's death brought to a halt their activities that had continued for 40 years, and one good tradition came to an end. Naxos Japan
