Miles took a temporary hiatus from music in the late 1970s. This album was released as a collection of previously unreleased works in 1979, during that "gap" period. This omnibus album documents Miles' ever-changing style, from the 50s sextet with Coltrane & Cannonball, Evans, and others, to the golden quintet of the 60s, to the electric era. Recordings were made in 1955, 1958, 1961, 1967, 1968, and 1970.
