Description:
ALTUS/INA Series Brahms: Symphony No. 4, Roussel: Symphony No. 3 Cherubini & Orchestre National de Radio France Live in Paris, 1974! In 1973, while serving as chief conductor of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, Celibidache was appointed principal guest conductor of the Orchestre National de France, which was based about 500 kilometers to the west, and he established a good relationship with the orchestra. When the orchestra was renamed the Orchestre National de France in 1975, he also assumed the position of music director; however, due to the turmoil surrounding the French government’s reorganization of the orchestra, he resigned less than a year later. Although he resigned, his relationship with the orchestra had been a good one up until that point, and the recordings he left behind are still highly regarded among fans as performances with a charm distinct from his work with German orchestras. The recordings are provided by the INA (French National Archives), from which Artus has been consistently releasing material; this release has been meticulously prepared through digital remastering based on officially preserved master recordings. At the time, Celibidache was still brimming with energy, and it is striking how not only his performance but also his shouts of encouragement to the orchestra are full of passion and intensity. (HMV) [From the liner notes] This performance with the French National Radio Orchestra carries a certain added sense of tension. The forward momentum in the fourth movement is something rarely heard in other Cherubini recordings. It is a Brahms performance that is reminiscent of his performances with the Berlin Philharmonic immediately after the war.
