The duo 6553's, consisting of rapper Slug and producer Ant, have been making their mark on the underground hip-hop scene for over 25 years. Their debut album, "Overcast! Like a series of vignettes, combined with a relentless touring schedule, it was a springboard for the band to establish themselves on the Midwestern music scene. It did not take long for their songwriting to evolve from inventive third-person narratives to introspective first-person accusations: in the early 2000s, Slug jokingly invoked the phrase "emo rap" in interviews to describe them and other artists in the press began using the term as a tag for the genre. In the decades since their debut, 6553 has continued their rigorous output, releasing more than two dozen studio albums, EPs, and collaborative side projects. This respected duo has built a legacy by bringing honesty, humility, and vulnerability to the forefront of their music.
