This is a collection of organ works by Leo Hassler, a composer and organist born in Nuremberg, Germany, who studied in Italy as a young man and is credited with bringing the most advanced Italian musical styles of the 16th century to Germany. In this album, the virtuoso organist Kelemen makes full use of the organs of two churches in Austria and Germany, selecting the appropriate instrument for each piece. The Johannes Freund organ, built in 1642, is a large instrument that has been rebuilt many times but retains its traditional sound. The Markus Günzer organ is smaller in size and has a lighter tone. The sound of the instrument is fully captured in this SACD hybrid disc. Naxos Japan
